The ADHD Entrepreneur’s Guide to Creating Consistency Starring: Batching, Accountability, and Imperfection
My co-host and I recently released our 52nd consecutive weekly podcast! Woo-woo! As two entrepreneurs with ADHD, this is big! We recorded an episode all about it, but I also want to share the steps we took to be consistent here!
If you’ve ever felt like you’re drowning in self-doubt or that you need everything to be perfect before you start something, which led to you not starting, grab a coffee (or your drink of choice) and read on.♥️
Embracing the Chaos
Life with ADHD isn’t exactly a smooth ride. As an ADHD entrepreneur, starting my podcast with a fellow ADHDer was no different from any other project—lots of brilliant ideas, random tangents, and moments where we’d be like, “What the actual fuck are we doing?” But you know what? That’s more than okay. We learned that our nervous systems crave interest, so we combined two topics we love: Money and ADHD! These topics are not just relevant to my life but also spark genuine curiosity. This keeps the conversation flowing, even if sometimes (or always) we wing it without digging up every single statistic. Who has the time, right?
The Power of Having a Co-Host and Accountability Buddies
One of our game-changing moves was partnering up as co-hosts. Having someone like Val, who gets it and shares the same passion, with me on this journey means I’m not alone in this messy, creative process. We try to schedule recording sessions in person because face-to-face interactions and time together fill my cup! There’s something about sitting together, bouncing ideas off each other, and just enjoying the creative energy that makes everything smoother.
Fake (or possibly real) Accountability??! I’ve set an expectation in my head with you—yes, you reading this, and our listeners—that a new episode drops every Thursday. The thought of letting you down (or even getting a cheeky “what the fuck, where’s the episode?” message) keeps me on track. Which, let’s be honest, probably wouldn’t happen, but I like to pretend our listeners are that hardcore!
The Art of Batching and Keeping It Simple
We discovered that planning every single detail wasn’t necessary. We keep a spreadsheet filled with potential episode ideas—a little creative pool that we dip into at recording time and add to whenever inspiration strikes. This loose planning means we can be flexible, talk off the cuff, and honestly, not get bogged down by the pressure to have every fact and statistic perfectly lined up. Some days, we might mention a stat in passing, but I’m all about the vibe and the message rather than crunching numbers, which would probably bore you anyways!
Batching is another trick that’s saved the day for us! Recording three to five episodes in one sitting helps us stay ahead of the game. When we meet for our recording days, we knock out several episodes (usually 3 to 5) so we never scramble at the last minute. We also try to stay ahead by at least a few weeks so that if something does happen, we are still good! Of course, I also add a little urgency to balance out being ahead by editing and scheduling one episode each week. It’s about finding that sweet spot and finding what works for us!
Starting Imperfectly is Better Than Not Starting at All
You don’t need to be “ready” to start something. I’ve learned that the idea of perfection can be paralyzing. When we launched my podcast, we really didn’t know what we were doing and we figured it out along the way. The early sound and video quality were pretty shit; we started using basic lapel mics I snagged from Amazon for around $60. And it worked to get us started while we could test things out and see if it was something we were going to stick to. We also invested in a simple recording and editing software that cost about $19 US/month, which was enough to get us rolling.
The lesson: instead of waiting for the “perfect” moment or the “perfect” setup, just start. Even if it feels rough around the edges, every episode and project is a stepping stone. The more you do it, the more you learn and the better you get. Your audience isn’t expecting a blockbuster right off the bat—they just appreciate you showing up consistently.
Embracing the Haters and Staying True to Yourself
I know some days you might get that mental voice telling you not to bother because someone somewhere is going to be a total asshole about it. Here’s my take: haters are often the ones who would never put themselves out there. If someone decides to be a dick, block them and move on. Your journey is for you, not for the handful of trolls lurking in the shadows. And honestly, it has only been a handful, and they are few and far between, so don’t let the assholes hold you back!
Key Takeaways for Your Own Journey
If you’re on the fence about starting something new—be it a podcast, a blog, or any other project—remember these little nuggets of wisdom:
Pick Topics You Love: Your interest will fuel your consistency.
Find an Accountability Buddy: Whether it’s a co-host, a friend, or even your audience, accountability goes a long way.
Batch Your Work: Get ahead by recording multiple episodes at once, then take your time with editing.
Start Imperfectly: Don’t wait until everything is perfect—get started, and let the process refine you.
Ignore the Haters: Block out the noise and focus on what matters—your growth and your message.
Celebrating episode 52 wasn’t just about marking a number—it was about celebrating persistence, learning from every imperfect step, and building something genuine. I hope our journey inspires you to jump into your own projects, even if you feel like you’re starting from scratch. Trust me, the journey is worth it.
Parting thought: just fucking start!!!
