The Hustle Culture Isn't the Way for ADHD Individuals

Let's talk about something that's been buzzing around lately: hustle culture. It gives us the idea that to be successful, you need to be constantly grinding, hustling, and pushing yourself to the brink. That the thought of working more and relaxing less is the ultimate path to long-term success, financially and for life in general! But hold up, pause, and take a breath because I'm here to tell you that hustle culture isn't the only path to success. In fact, for many of us with ADHD, it can be downright toxic and create a very short path to burnout!

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm all for putting in the work and chasing your dreams, but it's crucial to recognize that our energy levels (and interest levels) ebb and flow like the tide. We're not robots programmed to work non-stop until we drop. We have highs and lows, and that's perfectly okay.

One of the biggest challenges we face is burnout—that dreaded feeling of exhaustion, frustration, and overwhelm. And you know what? We're more prone to it than most because we can be perfectionists. When we get lost in a project, hyperfocus kicks in, and suddenly, hours have flown by without us even realizing it., and likely without eating a damn thing! Sound familiar?

The resulting burnout can mean that we need day, weeks, or even longer to recover and get back into our next project, or pick up where we left the last one. And that end up putting us further behind in the long run and we don’t need that in our lives!

I've been lost in the zone, convinced that if I keep pushing, I'll reach that elusive finish line. But here's the thing – burnout doesn't discriminate. It doesn't care how hard you've been working or how passionate you are about your goals. It'll sneak up on you when you least expect it, leaving you drained and demotivated.

So, what's the solution? How do we navigate this world of hustle culture without sacrificing our mental health and well-being? The answer is in paying attention to our energy and learning to work with it, not against it.

First things first, let's banish the guilt. I know it’s easier said than done, but it's time to stop beating ourselves up for needing breaks or taking things slow. Our brains are wired differently, and that's something to celebrate, not condemn. If you need to recharge, do it guilt-free. Whether it's a five-minute dance party, a walk in nature, or simply zoning out with your favourite show, honour what your body and mind need at that moment.

Next up, let's talk boundaries. Boundaries are the guardrails that keep us from veering off course and crashing into a pit of burnout. Set realistic limits on your time and energy, and don't be afraid to say no when you need to. Remember, you're not obligated to say yes to every opportunity that comes your way. Choose wisely and prioritize your well-being above all else, and remember that NO is a complete sentence!

Now, let's address the elephant in the room – productivity. In a world obsessed with productivity hacks and time management techniques, it's easy to feel like we're falling behind if we're not constantly hustling. But here's a little secret: productivity isn't about how many hours you clock or how many tasks you check off your to-do list. It's about working smarter, not harder. And because we can get more done in a few hours than most people can get done in a full workday, it’s important to remember that it’s okay for us to slow down.

Find what works for you, whether it's breaking tasks into smaller, manageable chunks, using timers to remember to take breaks, or harnessing the power of hyperfocus when it strikes. And remember, it's okay to ask for help. Whether it's delegating tasks, hiring a coach, or seeking support from friends and family, there's strength in recognizing when you need a helping hand.

For my fellow entrepreneurs out there, if you aren’t doing this already, consider designing your week around taking breaks. Maybe you work 4 days a week and take Mondays, Fridays, or even Wednesdays off to recharge. Take advantage of being the creator of your own schedule when you can!

Above all else, remember that your worth isn't tied to your productivity. You are enough, exactly as you are, flaws and all. So take a deep breath, embrace your energy, and know that you're not alone on this journey.

Hustle culture may be all the rage, but it's not the only way to achieve success. As ADHD individuals, we have unique strengths and challenges, and it's up to us to carve out our own path. So let's ditch the hustle mentality, prioritize our well-being, and redefine what success looks like on our own terms.

Here's to embracing our energy and living life on our own terms – hustle-free.
